Be sure to see the update at the bottom of this post.
We recently moved from KY back to upstate NY. My daughter is a honey mustard snob!! She will tell you so herself. We’ve tried honey mustard after honey mustard and none were satisfactory until she found Johnny Fleeman’s when we lived in KY. She fell in love. Before we left KY we made sure we had her Johnny Fleeman’s to go with us. A couple weeks ago she ran out and we searched everywhere around here for a honey mustard that would “cut the mustard”
. None did so I went online and did a search. I found the makers of Johnny Fleeman’s online. She was so excited that we could order it and have it delivered. I added 2 bottles to the shopping cart and checked out even though I felt the $11.91 (cheapest) shipping charge was highway robbery.
About a week later, I get an email from them saying my order is scheduled to ship that day. Well…I’m a little miffed that they waited an ENTIRE WEEK to ship, but relieved that she will soon quit bugging me about when it will arrive.
Not so fast…this morning I get an email from a person at the company. This is not an auto generated email from a credit card processor, it is an email from a real person at the company. It says:
Thank you for your recent order for Johnny Fleeman Products. However, I can not get your credit card to go through. Can you please give me a call to see if I have a wrong number or something.
The only time you should ever get an email from a person who sees your full card number is if you fill out an order form by hand or if you call in your card number. If you are entering it online, the secure credit card processor encrypts the number so no one at the company (or anywhere else for that matter) ever sees your full card number.
I proceed to check my credit card balance online and find out that my card is on hold. The credit card company had tried to contact me on Friday, but I did not get the message yet. There was an attempted charge to an airline in Finland that they considered unusual behavior. Thank goodness they put a hold on it when they were unable to contact me. This is a new card that I got 6 months ago because I lost my old one. So this is a new card number. I went back through all of my charges and the only place I used the card other than secure sites and swiping it at a terminal was at Johnny Fleeman’s site. I went back to check and sure enough, they are NOT a secured site.
I made a rookie mistake. I know better. I build websites and integrate shopping carts. My daughter was excited and I didn’t pay attention. I entered my card info into a non secure website. Here is the site address as it appears in the “enter your credit card details” part of the order process:

(See the full screen shot HERE)
This is wrong on so many levels. First, if you note the beginning of the URL. It is http:// – NEVER, EVER, EVER put your card details into a site that does not begin with https:// The S needs to be there. The only way a site can get the S in their URL is to have a secure shopping cart. If you notice, the URL has the word “secure” in it. That is a ploy by the web designer to get you to believe it is a secure site. The form is simply hosted in a FOLDER named “secure”. The site is far from secure.
Unsecured sites like these cause problems for EVERYONE. It is so easy to get a secure online shopping cart these days. Any business who does not have one is negligent (in my opinion) and deserves to lose business.
If you have a business and take online payments, DO NOT SKIMP to save money. Spend a couple extra bucks for the security certificate and a reputable online shopping cart or just take paypal payments. Either are sufficient. Will it cost you a little bit per transaction and/or per month? Absolutely!! Is it worth it in the long run? Absolutely!! If you have no clue how to do this, feel free to fill out the form on the right side of this page and I’ll be happy to contact you and give you a quote on getting a secure shopping cart up for you.
Bottom line – don’t do business with companies that:
1. Have unsecured sites
2. Don’t ship products until a week after the order is placed
3. Have no order confirmation email that goes out immediately, leaving the customer in limbo wondering what’s going on
PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS!! THIS IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT. These companies need to know we (internet purchasers) aren’t going to stand for it anymore.
Unfortunately, my daughter will have to suffer with the “I guess this will do if I have no other choice” honey mustard until Johnny Fleeman’s decides to get a security certificate and a secure shopping cart.
UPDATE – I am happy to announce that I heard directly from the owner of Johnny Fleeman’s. He was not aware of the fact that his site had recently been unsecure due to website designer changes. He instructed his new webmaster to take the order page offline until a security certificate has been obtained. He also sent my daughter her honey mustard at no charge. GREAT customer service!! If you are in or around TN, look for Johnny Fleeman products at your local Kroger grocery store.
