Do You Have a Presence on Social Spaces?

When I first meet someone (person or company) I want to do business with, there are a couple things that I do.  The first thing is a google search.  I type their name into google and see what I can find.  The second is a facebook search.

I have been listening to some really great speakers lately and was surprised when I searched for them on facebook and could not find them.  If you are in business, you need a social space presence.  Facebook is the largest social network.  You need to be on it if you are serious about your business.  Even if your business is a small local coffee shop, you need to be on facebook.

Let me give you an example.   I live in a very rural area.  Around here, there are no “chain” bars or well known nightclubs.  We have small corner bars that the locals tend to gather at.  I haven’t been out to the bars since 1999, but I can tell you that before social media, each bar had “regulars” that were there most nights and then some who came in on the weekends.  It was like the TV show Cheers.  Everyone knows your name.  But…that limits the customer base of that bar.  Now, there is one bar in the area that jumped on facebook very early.  The owner added people he went to school with and that snowballed into their friends adding the bar, etc…  He now does different events each night of the week and announces them on facebook.  He does trivia type things to get interaction with his facebook friends.  Prior to facebook, he may have had a handful of “regulars” at the bar each night.  Now, every night the bar is packed and there are things going on.  His business is booming.  All because he learned how to use facebook to drive traffic to his business.

Another example…our local sub shot has the most delicious subs in the world (in my opinion) and I suggested to them that they have a facebook presence.  The owner set up a facebook page, but they rarely post.  They interact with people once in a while if the mood strikes.  Their business has seen no increase from their efforts.  They need a social media manager, but don’t want to hire one so they will fall behind and someday look back and wish they had done things differently.

We live in a different world today.  Life moves so fast these days.  If you aren’t jumping onto the next thing, you are left behind.

What if you don’t have the time to interact on a daily basis with people online?  Hire a social media manager.   This is a person who will set up and optimize your social spaces and post and interact with people on your behalf.
